H4 - Dessins: Themes et Variations
Based on carefully chosen drawings made specifically for this project, Dessins: Themes et Variations was one of Henri Matisse's first large projects. In fact, no project thereafter would reach its size or scope. With over 100 images, Matisse decided to capture his "surprising progress" in drawing, after he felt he had perfected the process of expressing "a great variety of sensations [with] a minimum of means." The drawings were taken to Ambroise Vollard's successor to be properly rendered as lithographs. Each drawing was personally chosen by Matisse from 1941-42. Published by Martin Fabiani/ Printer: G. Duval, Paris.
