The Song of Songs

Only a handful of this image were signed by Chagall, and then given to the museum. Many of Chagall’s most sought after works of art contain the quintessential symbolism found in this piece. The flying lovers that appear in the foreground echo his love for Bella Chagall. The spectators in the stands on the upper left reminisce the days gone by while observing the Circus Madrano in Paris. And of course, the city skyline of St. Paul de Vence, his resting-place in the south of France. The red used for this piece is considered a “Chagall Red”, mixed by color specialist, Charles Sorlier.
